Please click on an FAQ question listed below:

Q: What is Deer Fortress?

A: Deer Fortress is an all-natural scent-based product that triggers the deer’s flight response to danger.

Q: Will deer become desensitized to Deer Fortress?

A: Unlike bad smelling odors from other repellents, Deer Fortress works by triggering the deer’s natural flight instincts from fear. Seven years of testing has shown that it is rare that deer become used to "fear."

Q: Is Deer Fortress safe?

A: Absolutely! Deer Fortress is all-natural, non-toxic to humans or animals, and environmentally safe. In fact, it’s so safe, it’s approved for use in vegetable gardens right through harvest!

Q: Is Deer Fortress economical?

A: Protecting your beautiful plantings and garden with Deer Fortress is far less costly than any other product available because there’s no-reapplication needed for the entire season!

Q: Is Deer Fortress easy to use?

A: It’s very easy to use! Just place them anywhere protection is required. Use them individually to protect small areas or items like flower pots or tree based hostas. Or use multiple units, spaced 4 to 8 feet apart, to cover larger vegetable gardens or ornamental gardens. And, the dark green color blends with foliage to make Deer Fortress virtually invisible.

Q: Will Deer Fortress work 100% of the time?

A: Deer Fortress combines a proven deer deterrent (blood) in a weather resistant package. Deer have been known simply ignore all types of repellents based upon their desire or need to eat where there is limited food, a particular food they prefer, or an established feeding pattern. Blood based deer repellents have been proven effective for decades, but none that we know of have been shown to be 100% effective for everyone or every deer. Best results are obtained when Deer Fortress is installed at planting or before existing plants start growing and especially before deer become accustomed to feeding in the area. Gardeners with significant deer foraging experience suggest using a minimum of two different repellents at the same time. Using Deer Fortress with other liquid or granular products will provide additional insurance for the more aggressive foraging situations and will provide constant protection after a rainstorm when other repellents wash away.

In field trials we observed that Deer Fortress was completely effective with unit separations as far apart as 20 feet when used in rural areas where repellents are seldom deployed. But in urban areas, where deer have encountered repellents on a daily basis since birth, multiple repellents used together with Deer Fortress spaced as close as 3 feet has been necessary to provide an effective deterrent. As with humans, the behavior of an individual deer is based upon its genetic makeup and environmental experiences and cannot be completely predicted. We have a photograph of a deer eating the backbone of a freshly filleted walleye in the Boundary Waters of northern Minnesota, proving that some deer will eat almost anything.

Q: How do I keep my dog from chewing them?

A: Dogs can be attracted to Deer Fortress units due to the blood (protein) contents. We have been told that approved dog deterrents (available at area Pet Shops) can be applied to a single Deer Fortress unit (before you put the units in place) and shown to your dog, training them that the product is not desirable. If you have an underground fence, we are told that simply putting training flags directly in front / next to one or two units can also train the dog to leave the units alone. Dogs are intelligent animals and once trained they are less likely to bother your Deer Fortress units further. Under no circumstances should you use any products that can be harmful. We are in the process of testing specific solutions for inclusion into future designs. If you have found an effective solution, please let us know. NOTE: Although we are passing on solutions that our customers have recommended, we at RepelIT LLC recommend that you call your veterinarian for advice specific to your pet.

Q: Something appears to be eating the contents of the units, what could it be?

A: In some cases, raccoons, chipmunks, and cats have knocked units over and attempted to raid the contents due to the protein scent. We have heard from some customers that putting rose bush clipping on the ground around the base of the stake will deter such animals because of the tenderness of their feet. If you hear of a solution that works, please feel free to pass it on to us at your convenience.

Q: Will Deer Fortress work for Rabbits?

A: Deer Fortress is a blood based product designed to produce a fear / flight response in deer and has in some cases proven effective for Rabbits as well if the units are placed closer to the ground.

Q: Will Deer Fortress work in the winter?

A: Repellents have been shown to have a limited to zero effect during winter months in freezing climates for two reasons. First, as temperatures drop, the scent from many products are reduced simply due to the cold. As a perfect example, think of a dead animal smell, you can smell that for a great distance in the summer but once frozen, it is hard to smell when you are standing by it. Second, once there has been a killing frost, the available food supply for deer is significantly reduced, and in many areas where the deer population is dense, the competition for food to stay alive will cause deer to ignore most if not all deterrents.

Q: Why should I buy Deer Fortress rather than other blood products?

A: Deer Fortress is weather protected. Other blood-based products must be broadcast by hand and reapplied after every rain, making them expensive and time consuming. And if you don’t re-apply timely, deer can do significant damage in the mean time. Deer Fortress also saves you the handling of a disagreeable product. Once in place, Deer Fortress requires no maintenance during the entire growing season.

Q: Is there a money back guarantee?

A: Yes! We stand behind our product 100% and if Deer Fortress does not work against the deer in your area we would be happy to refund your money, or we will work with you to help solve the problem. Please see our Return Policy on the Customer Service Page of our website.

Q: I purchased Deer Fortress from you and would like a refund.

A: Please see our Return Policy on the Customer Service Page of our website.

Q: Are there re-fills?

A: There are no refills, you will want to throw the units away at the end of the season and buy new ones in the spring.

Q: Do I need to purchase new product every year?

A: Yes.

Q: What is the product made of? Can it hurt me?

A: Deer Fortress is comprised of a non-toxic dried blood product. The blood is a special proprietary mix of animal blood and is a natural environmentally safe compound.

Q: Do you ship to Canada or outside the United States?

A: Currently we do not ship outside of the US. We are looking to expand our shipping areas in the future.

Q: How long will Deer Fortress work?

A: Deer Fortress will work for one full growing season, spring, summer, and fall. During winter months, when night temperatures drop below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, Deer Fortress' effectiveness is reduced.

Q: Will Deer Fortress work in the winter?

A: During winter months, when night temperatures drop below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, Deer Fortress' effectiveness is reduced.

Q: When my hostas or daylilies bloom, the Deer Fortress stakes are so much shorter than the blossoms that the deer come and eat the tall blooms. How can I keep them from eating these taller plants?

A. Taller garden stakes (click here to see a photo) are available at most garden centers. The Deer Fortress units hang perfectly from these taller stakes and protect taller plants, such as blooming hostas.
